Plan B Goes Green

If you didn’t know Plan B Knowsley is a community led social programme for adults with Autism between 18 – 30yrs.

Paula & Drew Thompson who run the Plan B programme will be going green (along with our Plan B members) over the next few months as Plan B has been nominated by members of the local community to take part in Asda Huyton’s Green Token charity giving scheme throughout the months of March and June 2017.

Each customer who shops at Asda Huyton receives a Green Token at the checkout (when requested) to pop into the charity box of their choice on their way out of the store.  At the end of June the Green Tokens are added up and the good cause with the most Tokens receives £500 and 2nd and 3rd place receive £200 from the Asda Foundation, which is fantastic news for Plan B.

The next time your in Asda Huyton, don’t forget to ask for green tokens and to pop them into the Plan B Knowsley box to support our continued activities and support for our 18 strong members – as well as parents and carers.

Disabled Facilities Grants – A Knowsley Guide

disabled-facilities-grants-knowsley-talkAs part of our user led group activity for local people with disabilities, November’s Public Information Session is a very Knowsley low down on Disabled Facilities Grants. 

Our monthly community talk takes place at the Knowsley Centre for Independent Living, Huyton L36 6HY on Wednesday 2 November 12.30 – 2pm. All welcome

We will be joined by guest speaker Graham Keeling who is part of the Knowsley Council’s Disabled Facility Grants Team, based at the Centre. His talk will answer a lot of common questions we may have, for example who the grants are  for, what they can be used to improve or adapt, is there an eligibility criteria…..and more.

Our community led information sessions are informal and interactive – designed to enable all audience members to ask lots of questions and obtain answers. But if you don’t feel you are able to ask a question at any of our sessions, please speak to one of our group members and we’d be happy to ask a question on your behalf.

Why are we running Public Information Sessions?

We think it’s vital that local disabled people and carers are clued up about what’s out there to help them and what local support is available – there’s a lot of changes to taking place and opportunities available that local people just aren’t aware of.

“Being prepared and clued up on things is a big deal for us – and as they say knowledge is power. But it’s knowing what to do with the information, how to find your way around things, what sort of choices you have and who to go to to ask for help (if you need it). This is why we are running these” MO’S

Our past topics for our monthly information sessions include ‘A lowdown on PIP’, ‘Direct Payments’, ‘Carer Assessments’, ‘Power of Attorney’. We also offer you the opportunity for any suggestions you may have on a topic or issue you’d like us to cover in the future as part of our monthly information sessions.

Shaping the Future – Health & Social Care in Knowsley

shaping-the-future-health-social-care-in-knowsleyDo you want to help local people in Knowsley who may need care and support to live well?  Do you have ideas about how to help local people lead happier, healthier lives for longer? 

A Liverpool based company called So Mo is working on behalf of Knowsley Council, will be running 3, one day public events in Halewood, Kirkby and Huyton.

‘These events are part of a new approach to social care and health. They will look at how we support the growth of more local ideas & initiatives in the neighbourhoods where people grow, live, work and age’.

Locations, dates and times for ‘Shaping the Future’ Public Events are as follows:

Halewood: Tuesday 1 November 9.30am – 4pm at New Hutte Neighbourhood Centre, Lichfield Road L26 1TT

Kirkby: Monday 7 November 9.30 – 4pm at Northwood Community Centre, Gilescroft Avenue L33 9TW

Huyton: Thursday 10 November 9.30 – 4pm at Court Hey Methodist Church, Roby Road L14 3NU

Lunch will also be provided.

Who should attend?
If you have ideas about how Knowsley can do things differently then get along to one of the local events.

Personal Independence Payment Information Session

Guide to PIP_2016A Useful Guide to Personal Independence Payments (PIP) is the hop topic for our August Information Session.

Members for our disability community group, the Knowsley User Led Organisation will be hosting a series of public information sessions in 2016 on topics and issues we as local people with disabilities would like to know more in depth & in detail about.

Our next information session, covering Personal Independent Payments  takes place on Wednesday 3 August, 12.30 – 2pm at Knowsley’s Centre for Independent Living, L36 6HY.

It’s important to our group, that local people with disabilities living in Knowsley are equipped with clear information and facts about Personal Independence Payments, not only to help themselves live happy & healthy lives but also any information that learned on the day can be shared with other people in Knowsley.

We think it’s vital that disabled people are clued up about what’s out there to help them and what local support is available – there’s a lot of changes taking place that local people just aren’t aware of let alone prepared for.

Funding Available with Skills for Care

trainingIf you employ your own care and support (an individual employer), you can apply to to Skills for Care  to cover the cost of care related training for yourself and your personal assistant (PA).

Who can apply?

If you receive a direct payment from your local authority, a personal health budget (PHB) or use your own money to employ your own care and support staff, you can apply for this funding.

What can I claim for?

The fund can be used for training to develop you as an employer and to develop the skills of your Personal Assistant.

The fund can cover the direct costs of training and qualifications, travel and the cost of hiring replacement support whilst your usual PA is attending training.

Local Support for Carers

care actFrom April 2015, care and support in England is changing for the better. The new Care Act will help to make care and support more consistent across the country.

‘Care and support’ is the term we use to describe the help some adults need to live as well as possible with any illness or disability they may have. It can include help with things like washing, dressing, eating, getting out and about and keeping in touch with friends or family.

If you support someone as a carer, you could benefit from the changes.

Supporting you in caring

In England, millions of us provide unpaid care or support to an adult family member or friend, either in our own homes or somewhere else. ‘Caring’ for someone covers lots of different things, like helping with their washing, dressing or eating, taking them to regular appointments or keeping them company when they feel lonely or anxious.

If this sounds like you, from April 2015, changes to the way care and support is provided in England mean you may be able to get more help so that you can carry on caring and look after your own wellbeing.

The right help at the right time

You may be eligible for support, such as a direct payment* to spend on the things that make caring easier; or practical support, like arranging for someone to step in when you need a short break. You may prefer just to be put in touch with local support groups so you have people to talk to.

If the person you care for lives in Knowsley, Knowsley Council can help you find the right support and you can ask them for a carer’s assessment.

Assessing your wellbeing

A carer’s assessment will look at the different ways that caring affects your life and work out how you can carry on doing the things that are important to you and your family. Your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing will be at the heart of this assessment. As a result of the assessment, you may be eligible for support. We will also offer you advice and guidance to help you with your caring responsibilities and help you look after your own wellbeing.

You can have a carer’s assessment even if the person you care for does not get any help from the council, and they will not need to be assessed.

Kerry Farm Funded Short Breaks

Kerry FarmHere’s the info our board member Angela Cornwall shared with us about Kerry Farm run by the Papworth Trustwhich is a leading disability charity.

Papworth Trust offers funded holidays to people of all ages affected by disability.

Angela tells us it’s well worth filling out the application form explaining why you need the break, what a funded break would mean to you and your family and what activities you would like to do as part of your short break stay.

The Hospital Saturday Fund

The Hospital Saturday Fund provides grants to individuals from the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

It is able to help with the purchase of specialised equipment and practical forms of treatment.  This includes:

  • Mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and mobility scooters
  • Medical appliances and aids such as hearing aids,nebulisers and computer equipment
  • Therapeutic equipment and treatments such orthopaedic beds,riser/recliner chairs and complementary therapies
  • Home adaptations – walk in showers, access ramps, stair lifts
  • Miscellaneous – washing machines, respite breaks

To apply: Either download an application form or complete the online form on the website.

The Fund is also able to provide grants to registered health charities.

Heinz Anna and Carol Kroch Foundation

The Heinz, Anna and Carol Kroch Foundation provides grants for individuals suffering from severe poverty or on-going medical conditions. It will also support victims of domestic abuse.

Grants of £100 to £500 are provided towards hospital travel costs, household items, adaptations or disability equipment. They will not fund holidays or education.

Applications must be made in writing by a recognised professional such a social worker, doctor or Citizen Advice representative who must include the individual’s financial information.

Florence Nightingale Aid in Sickness Trus

The Trust provides grants to help people who are ill, convalescent or disabled.

It currently supports people of all ages with medical conditions, disability or poor health. However, if funding is limited preference with be given to people who have professional, secretarial, or administrative qualifications.

Funding may be provided for a range of medical items and services to improve quality of life. This includes TENS machines, orthopaedic beds, hoists and household items such as washing machines.

Applications should be made by a health professional or social worker on behalf of the client using the Trust’s application form which can be downloaded from their website.
