Changing Places for a Better Knowsley

Knowsley’s Centre for Independent Living (CIL) has been praised for installing a designated Changing Places facility.

The Centre for Independent Living, based in Huyton provides essential services to help people maintain their independence and mobility, which are delivered by local partners.

To further support the people of Knowsley, a Changing Places facility has been installed, becoming only one of five in the borough. The facility is for people who are unable to use standard accessible toilets. This includes people with profound physical and learning disabilities, such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis. The extra equipment and space allows them to use the toilets safely and comfortably.

There was an official grand opening of the Changing Places Toilet facility on Wednesday 20 December, which was well attended by staff from the Trust and Knowsley’s User Led Organisation. Features of the new facility include:

  • Bench – height adjustable, adult sized, wall mounted
  • Hoist – ceiling, loop
  • Peninsular toilet
  • Non slip floor
  • Floor space 7sq. m
  • Emergency alarm
  • Privacy screen
  • Paper roll
  • Managed
  • Locked

Paula Thompson, Chair of Knowsley’s User Led Organisation said: “Our community is delighted to see that Knowsley’s Centre for Independent Living now has an official Changing Places facility. We’d like to thank the team from North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust for installing this facility, which is nationally recognised with Changing Places.”

Sara Harrison, Head of Service for the Centre of Independent Living, said:

“This facility is a small step to help make life a bit easier for local people and their carers who can’t access standard accessible toilets. It’s located downstairs in the reception area and joins another four designated Changing Places in Knowsley – may there be many more”.
