Onwards and Upwards for Al’s Club!

als clubAl’s Club is a social activity group for young people aged 16 – 30 with disabilities in the Knowsley area.

The group meets at Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park, Longview Drive in Huyton every Thursday from 6.30 till 8.30pm.

With a small charge of just £2 at Al’s Club you can meet people and make new friends – plus there’s lots to see, do and join in with!

Al’s Club also run a Tweenies session for 0 – 16yrs every Sunday from 11am till 1pm.

Theatre Programme for Young People

Theatre designIf you are aged 16-25 and not in education, training or employment you are welcome to ‘Get Started’ and join up with the Princes Trust & Everyman Theatre for a FREE Training Programme.

Young people aged 16 – 25yrs will get to work with professionals in a real theatre to gain skills in lighting, sound and projection. Get to see a professional production, find out about backstage jobs in a theatre,  work as a group to design and create staging for a production and gain a Bronze Arts Award.

You’ll also enjoy a fun week improving your teamwork, communication skills and confidence and have the chance to go onto further courses with the Theatre.

No prior experience needed, the course is FREE to attend and includes travel expenses, lunch will also be provided. You will receive three months support after the programme to help you move into education, training or employment.

The course will run from 7th to 11th September 2015 at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool.

A taster day is being held on 2nd September 2015 at the Everyman Theatre.

The cards are discreet, easy for you to use and easy for others to understand especially if your disability is hidden.

Young Persons Drug and Alcohol Support Service Knowsley

Alcohol support serviceENGAGE Knowsley is a free, friendly and confidential support service for young people aged between 10-18 years, who may have issues with drugs/alcohol.

Engage offers:

  • One to one appointments for young people
  • Group Work (including targeted interventions)
  • Information, advice and guidance
  • Support and advice for parents and families
  • Outreach Appointments
  • Support around related areas such as housing, education/training, employment and finances.

Young people in Knowsley can also refer themselves to the Engage service and Engage accept referrals from most agencies/services working with young people including schools, GPs, housing, youth service.

Applying for a Blue Badge in Knowsley

blue_badge KnowsleyIf you have a disability which affects your mobility you may qualify for a Blue Badge.

It allows you to park to park in ‘Blue Badge’ parking spaces, even if you aren’t the person driving.

If you meet at least one of the following criteria, you can apply for a Blue Badge:

  • You receive the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance
  • You are severely sight impaired (blind)
  • You received a score of 8 points or more under the ‘Moving Around’ activity of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payments.
  • You receive a War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • You have had a payment under tariff 1 to 8 of the Armed Forces compensation scheme and are certified as having a permanent and substantial disability likely to last the rest of your life
  • You have a permanent and substantial disability which makes walking difficult or impossible
  • You have a severe upper limb disability in both arms and can drive a vehicle, but can’t turn a steering wheel by hand even if the wheel is fitted with a turning handle
  • You belong to an organisation that uses a vehicle to transport disabled people

Children under 3 may also qualify for a badge if they have a medical condition which means that bulky medical equipment needs to be carried around with them, and / or they need to be near to a car in case they need speedy treatment.

How to apply

Apply in person at any KMBC One Stop Shop.  If this is not possible, please contact Knowsley Council for advice. The fee for a Blue Badge is £10.

You can also download and print off the Blue Badge application form and fill it in beforehand to save time. Otherwise, staff at Knowsley’s One Stop Shop will help you fill in the form when you call in.

You will need to provide:

  • Two passport standard photographs
  • Two forms of identification. One photo ID such as a passport, bus pass or photocard driving licence, and at least one must show your current address and be dated within the last 12 months.
  • Your most recent qualifying benefit award letter (within the last 12 months). See the list of qualifying benefits above.
  • £10 administration fee

Please note, if you apply but do not have a qualifying benefit, you will have to undergo an independent mobility assessment.  Please contact the Council for an application pack to arrange an assessment.

Blue Badge application form

How long your Blue Badge application will take

Knowsley Council will usually order your badge on the day you apply. You should receive it in the post within five working days.

If you are applying for a renewal of your current badge and need a mobility assessment KMBC recommend that you apply at least six weeks before your badge runs out to ensure you receive your new badge in time.

The Knowsley Carers Centre provide information, support and help to apply for the  the following benefits:

Plan B – Being Safe Online

plan-b-logo-strapline-smallerAs part of our volunteer led Plan B Programme for Young People with Autism, our community group The Knowsley User Led Organisation delivered a ‘Being Safe Online’ session to our group.

We covered and discussed topics such as secure passwords, how much personal information you want to share with others, limiting risks, fake accounts, what to do if you feel unsafe, but our key message to our Plan B members was ‘YOU ARE IN CONTROL’.

Getting online is an important part of our Plan B programme and is one of the different ways young people can connect to each other. We’ve created a Plan B Knowsley CONNECT group on Facebook and it’ a safe and accessible place for young people with Autism to meet new people and make friends.

With 91% of 16 – 24 year old’s accessing and using social networking sites as well as learning online across the UK, we know the enormous benefits of the internet, but equally and importantly we all know and understand the risks.

Get Together with Action for Blind People

Logo_-_Action_for_Blind_PeopleAction for Blind People are excited to hear your ideas and get you involved in planning activities for 18-25 year olds with a visual impairment across the NW in 2015/16.

The Get Together is taking place Tuesday 18 August 2015 and it will be a chance to chat and meet friends old and new, and more importantly, it will give Action for Blind People and you an opportunity to shape your events.

Taking place at 11am – 3.30pm at Manchester Central Fire Station, there will also be a fire safety talk, followed by a tour of the station.

Be Alert to Scams

scamIt’s Scams Awareness Month and residents are urged to be on their guard against cons and rip-offs. Around three million people in the UK fall victim to mass-marketing scams every year, costing millions of pounds.

Bogus schemes include fake lotteries and prize draws, investment and PPI scams and get-rich-quick cons.

The scams may be sent through the post, via email and over the phone and often target elderly and vulnerable residents.

Knowsley Council’s Trading Standards team has set up a series of secure scam mail bins in different public buildings across the borough for the duration of Scams Awareness Month.

If you have received any suspected scam mail, please drop it into one of the bins and our Trading Standards team will use the information to uncover any scams operating in the area.

Tips for staying safe

  • Never give out your bank account details or other personal information to people you don’t know or trust
  • Never send money to a company you do not know or send money if told to respond quickly or confidentially
  • You can’t win a lottery you didn’t enter and you don’t send money for something a letter claims you have won
  • Don’t reply to emails or letters from strangers even if they seem to know your name
  • Make sure you have up to date computer security including passwords and antivirus software
  • NEVER agree to buy goods and services on the doorstep or as a result of a telephone cold call
  • If something sounds too good to be true it probably is!
