Paula Thompson – Knowsley Resident

7Hi, My name is Paula Thompson I have lived in Knowsley all my life. I lived in Halewood until I was 10 years old then we moved to Whiston where I have lived since. I live with my son Drew, who has Autism and other health issues.

Throughout my son’s life we have been involved with many different services. Always having to fight for the right service to meet my son’s needs has been a struggle at times. This led to me being actively involved in community issues and I am very passionate about disability or any discrimination, people’s rights and equality.

I love being involved with community work as well as being Chair of KULO I am a trustee and volunteer Advocate with Knowsley Pensioners Advocacy and Information Service (KPAIS), a member of the Autism Service Development Group (ASDG), Carers Partnership Board/Strategy Action Group/Vision, Patient Participation Group (PPG) and Learning Disabilities Partnership Board (LDPB).

I try and attend other meetings such as the Knowsley Engagement Forum, I like to make sure in meetings that issues for disabled residents and carers are being heard.

Plan B Knowsley is my passion and it’s something Drew and I have set up in response to a lack of social and communication activities for young autistic adults, who want to make friends and try new things.  You can find out more about Plan B by clicking here.

I like to read, love my soaps, Corrie being my favourite. I like to watch reality shows like Big Brother. I completed a degree in Social Work in 2012 in the hope I can work with disabled people in the future to make sure their needs are being met.

My parents are my heroes, they have been through so much but try to make the best out of life and have been supporting me and Drew for many years.

At KULO we always welcome new community members so please get in touch if you want to join in and get involved.
